My Favorite Things!
I am a self-proclaimed product junkie. It’s okay though! Because my obsession with trying new products has led me to find the tried-and-true, can’t-live-without items that I want to share with you. You’ll save time, money and effort by simply reading through this list an deciding if the product descriptions sound like a good fit for you and your hair type!
I’ve been using the Aquage line of hairsprays for over a decade on my updo styles. But there is one Aquage hairspray that stands out from the rest for a perfect, everyday spray. The Finishing Spray is lightweight, pleasantly fragranced and doesn’t create build-up. This is the perfect solution to keep your locks in place – whether you’re spritzing some fly-aways or locking in an elaborate updo. The great thing about this hairspray is that it can be layered – simply spray a little for a light hold or spray a second or third round for a heavier hold. My fine-haired ladies will rejoice because this hairspray will not weigh down your hair! To make it even more fabulous, it brushes and washes out of your hair beautifully – no worries about heavy build-up or massive tangles!
There are a myriad of types of heat protectants – before blow dry, before ironing, with and without a hold factor. I have some faves in all the categories but, if I had to throw everything else out and simplify my life, my all-time favorite is Kenra’s Blow Dry Spray. I cry when I run out of this one in the salon! Not only will it protect your luscious locks from the big, bad blow dryer, but this spray will also cut down your blow drying time! Yes, those of you with massive manes of hair are going to love this time-saver. Plus, the product detangles, adds shine, and – wait for it – smells heavenly! The Blow Dry Spray is not the cheapest of our products and, though I do like to offer affordable options, I think the multitude of benefits in this single item make it a good value for the cost. In the long run, you’ll probably save money just having all of this built into one product rather than having multiple items on your shelf!
Kenra wins in this category as well! Their Texturizing Taffy is divine. This is my go-to for my short-hair and curly clients. I love to use this to define texture and layers in a pixie cut (for fine AND coarse hair) and it also works great as a finishing product for my curly girls – simply put some in my hands and scrunch it through to define the curls! It’s lightweight and doesn’t create build-up and - Kenra is a master at this - it smells awesome. Clients frequently tell me it actually smells like taffy! I have regulars who can’t live with out this one and, though I only occasionally use it on my own hair, I refuse to run out of it at the salon. If I did, how would I finish styling my clients?
If you’re new to dry shampoo, see my article about over-washing your hair. There is a real benefit to finding a good dry shampoo and, I’ll admit, I am extra picky in this category. There are dry shampoos that create build-up, that turn your hair white, that smell funky… that just don’t work! I’ve searched high and low and have a range of partially empty bottles in my cabinets but my number one pick is Monat The Champ Dry Shampoo. I previously used the entire Monat line - I'm mixing things up a bit these days - but I still can’t go without the dry shampoo. It’s got a great smooth application, settles into my scalp perfectly and, once dry, I simply brush it through for a flawless finish. It has a pleasant smell and NO build-up. And, bonus, it lasts all day! If you have experience with dry shampoos, you know that not all of them can make it through the day. Additionally, the line of Monat products are fantastically toxin-free, which is increasingly becoming something I’m on the lookout for.
Shampoo and Conditioner
I believe in pairing these items together and, since you can’t have one without the other, my tops in this category are Verb Ghost Shampoo and Conditioner. I love this line! In fact, I’m in the process of experiencing the other products to make sure nothing is going to get knocked off of this list. For now though, the Ghost Shampoo and Conditioner made it into this category. This sulfate and paraben-free product duo is fantastic. It’s perfect for any hair texture – fine, coarse, curly, and straight. It’s lightweight but effective – my hair feels fabulously clean and moisturized and I can still get some nice volume out of my fine texture. It also keeps my hair looking great for Day 2, when I don’t wash. It smells nice, lasts forever, and has a very pretty price tag.
I would love to hear if you have experience with any of these products or if you have suggestions that you think I should try. I'm always on the look-out for great options to give us the best hair possible!
